The Ferrari 166 S was an advancement of Ferrari's 125 S sports race auto that turned into a games auto for the road as the 166 Inter. Just 39 Ferrari 166 S's were generated, soon emulated by the handling of the 166 Mille Miglia (MM) which was made in much bigger numbers from 1949 to 1952. The 166 MM were indeed overhauled 166 S and were the autos that score a considerable lot of Ferrari's first global triumphs and made Ferrari a genuine contender on the hustling industry. It imparted its Aurelio Lampredi-planned tube frame and twofold wishbone/live hub suspension with the 125. As the 125, the wheelbase was 2420 mm long. 39 cases were generated from its presentation at the Turin Motor Show in 1948 to its retirement in 1950. It was swapped by the 2.3 L 195 S in 1950. The leading 166 Inter was outlined by Touring's boss beautician, Carlo Anderloni. 166 S rivalry models were ordinarily coachbuilt via Carrozzeria Allemano.

The 1.5 L Gioacchino Colombo-planned V12 motor of the 125 was changed, notwithstanding, with single overhead camshafts specified and a bigger 2.0 L (1995 cc/121 in³) relocation. This was realized with both a drag and stroke build, to 60 by 58.8 mm separately.

Engine Trend Classic named the 166 MM Barchetta as number six in their rundown of the ten "Greatest Ferraris of all time.
